When it came time to record new stuff, after 4 years of touring and a hiatus of 2 years, Alan Charles didn't feel like recording the second part of the original Existence concept. Over the years, he had written new songs and he didn't want to impose "old" numbers on the new musicians who had recently joined the band. Also, he wanted to test the radio market to better understand where Existence stood.
He chose to record 3 songs, one of which was a rework of many jam sessions the band use to do as an encore over the last few years. He combined odd sections recorded live to form what would become Overtime. Of the two other songs, Another Fine Day Of... really represents how Existence's sound had evolved. The basic number was worked out in the studio, thus the credit attributed to all.
The EP was sent to more than a hundred radio stations in America and reached the 11th spot in Detroit's WRKO album chart in the fall of 1998. Galvanized by the overwhelming response, Alan decided to record a full new concept the next year.

Lorsque vint le temps d'enregistrer du nouveau matériel, après 4 ans de tournée et une pause de 2 ans, Alan Charles se sentait incapable d'enregistrer la deuxième partie du concept Existence original. Il avait composé de nouvelles pièces au court des années et il ne voulait pas imposer l'enregistrement de "vieilles" compositions aux musiciens récemment arrivés. Il voulait également tester le marché de la radio et comprendre où se positionnait Existence dans le marché.
Il choisit d'enregistrer 3 nouvelles pièces dont l'une d'elle était un assemblage d'improvisations que le groupe jouaient en rappel lors de ses spectacles et enregistrés au cours des années. Ce montage hétéroclite devint Overtime. Des deux autres pièces choisies, Another Fine Day Of... représente bien combien le son d'Existence s'était transformé. Le canevas de base fut travaillé par les musiciens en studio ce qui en fit une réelle collaboration de tous.
